Local Morris Team Celebrate 50 Years

On Saturday 4th July 2009 the streets of Wantage will come alive with music and dance. The celebration is the 50th anniversary of the formation of the Icknield Way Morris Men  at Icknield School in Wantage (now King Alfred’s East).  More than 12 other morris teams will be in attendance and the forms of English traditional dance being represented will be Rapper, Border, Step Clog and North West as well as the Cotswold style danced by Icknield.  Former and founder members of the team will be invited for the day so look out for the familiar faces of past Wantage residents.

In the evening the celebrations will continue with a ceilidh in Old Mill Hall, Grove near Wantage.  The Oxfordshire based Woodpecker Band, who are one of the best known electric folk dance bands in southern England, will play the tunes as caller Mike Courthold guides you through the dances.  This barn dance is jointly organised by White Horse Ceilidhs, so as with the others in the series, no experience is necessary and the emphasis is on having fun!

Dancing around Wantage will take place between 10.30am and 5.00pm and the ceilidh starts at 8.00pm.  Ticket prices for the ceilidh are £8 adults, £4 under 16s, available from the Vale & Downland Musuem in Wantage or tel 07855 548512.  See www.icknieldwaymorrismen.org.uk and www.whitehorseceilidhs.org.uk for more details.
