the oldest hill figure in Britain
The area was revered as a sacred place, maintained
by centuries of scouring*
and has a pagan mysteriousness.
Originally considered Saxon and then Iron
Age, recent field work involving `Optical Dating', that establishes
when material was last exposed to sunlight, now points to
the late Bronze Age (1000 - 800 BC).
More recent work in archaeoastronomy suggests
it may even be Neolithic (4500 - 2200 BC) but this, at present,
seems to be at odds with the field work.
